Mixed Media - Cast glass of the Integument (Skin) of man and a variety of animals, aluminum, Plexiglas, plastic, and LED electronics.
The Inspiration for this work uses glass in an innovative book structure reflective of the fragility of life, the many spectacular properties of skin (the integument) and as a critical barrier between the living and non-living environments. Cast glass pages highlight the evolution and properties of skin seen in the animal kingdom from fish to humans. It is an interactive piece using cast glass, sand blasted text words and LED lighting to illuminate each page as it is viewed. The work entitled “Integument 1” activates intimate relationships between the viewer and science. The use of glass is intended to capture the effervescent fragility of life embodied in skin. The molded glass skins form the pages, each noting one of the many functions of skin. The viewer is invited to lay their own fingers against the glass surface as well turn the pages onto the platform thereby activating LED lights which give each page an inner glow. The light enhances the uniqueness of the textural quality of each skin that is revealed by the special properties of glass thereby creating a synergy between the medium and the subject matter. This interactive glass-based book thus engages the viewer to use their own senses of touch and sight in a process of discovery.
