Binding - Stab

This assemblage of books was commissioned by Shawn Nesbitt for the occasion of the 80th birthday of her father Michael Nesbitt. The books are housed in a small "steamer trunk" with the top book a modified stab binding. The book is entitled "Beneath the Surface" and features the history of Michael's family from his grandfather Major Barrett-Hamilton to Michael's family. It honors the career of Major Barrett-Hamilton a famous Irish biologist, a world expert on mammals, particularly whales and polar mammals. Beneath the top book are six smaller concertina books featuring images from the talks of the Barrett-Hamilton Memorial lecture series.
